Some of my favorite forest friends are Mockingbirds. It was a joyous sight to see a family today in what is always the Mockingbird Tree. It has been their tree since i arrived in 2009. In the nearly 8 years I have been living in Hot Springs National Park no other birds have nested in this tree. I witness a Cardinal fly over and land then promptly leave. The Mockingbirds are very territorial.
Dad was on a top branch looking miserable with his molting head. Two juveniles where jockeying for position pushing and flapping to gain dominance over one and other. Mom was out hunting and returned with a beak full of insects for the kids. A family tree filled with a favorite family.

HSNP Fledgling Mockingbird
Fledglings are learning to be independent although still call out for help from parents. I was lucky to see these sweet little mockingbird’s learning flight skills between small trees. It is a delight to see the beauty of these beautiful winged beings. In parks, on trails stop, listen and look up.

Spring is a celebration of Nature awakening from her winter beauty sleep. It is also the perfect time for an early morning start to wander in the woods. Four hours with the Trees, Birds and Wildflowers is a perfect way to start any day.

The other day I mentioned to my husband it had been awhile since I had photographed a Chipmunk. I lamented that I missed seeing them when we hike.
Nature was listening… they showed up everywhere we were hiking. Plus the addition of Mockingbirds (mom and juvenile) made it a perfect morning. Thank you Nature 😉
