Often we view autumn in broad strokes and lavish color sweeping across Forests and it is easy to miss the details of each individual leaf that makes up the colorful seasonal tapestry. Summer Trees once lush with green turn glorious shades of gold, orange, red and rust. Some leaves explode with a sudden change of color while other slowly transition with the tiniest of Nature’s brush strokes.

A graceful transition of color and light touches each trail within our Forest in Hot Springs National Park. A tiny Prairie Lizard warms itself on a Rock below the changing autumn Leaves, further up North Mountain a Monarch Butterfly tastes the nectar of a purple Aster. A familiar family of deer crosses our path as we near the end of our journey.

Hot Springs National Park sits on the demarcation line of many migration and wintering patterns for a wide variety of birds. During the past four years I have actively recorded the many species that breed, migrate through and stay year-round in the park. As many birds migrate back to Central and South America for the winter our year round winged residents become more visible in the changing leave. Lovely gray and buff colored birds that are less visible in the heavy summer canopy are revealed in the colorful autumn transition. I was very happy to see this tiny juvenile Blue-Headed Vireo and hope to hear its song often through the colder months on the trail.
