The Red Spotted Purple Butterfly has a range of colors. Most in Hot Springs National Park would be better described as an Orange Spotted Blue Butterfly. The blue runs from turquoise to midnight depending upon the season. I have only seen a handful that perfectly matched its given Butterfly name.

Wildflowers and Butterflies are a rare sight due to a lack of rain. Usually in late summer Asters and Woodland Sunflowers decorate the edges of trails throughout Hot Springs National Park. The low number of Wildflowers has meant greatly reduced population of Butterflies.

Last year Butterflies were scarce in Hot Springs National Park. Many friends throughout the country also reported seeing less insects including Butterflies in 2014. Nature is resilient if we give her space to breathe and recover from human devastation. It has been a blessing to see colorful wings in 2015.
Please be thoughtful in how you protect your plants by avoiding chemical pesticides in favor of interspersing repelling plants. Also a mix of garlic and cayenne makes a great plant spray.
