Colorful Butterflies return to the Rainforest

Last year Butterflies were scarce in Hot Springs National Park.  Many friends throughout the country also reported seeing less insects including Butterflies in 2014.  Nature is resilient if we give her space to breathe and recover from human devastation.  It has been a blessing to see colorful wings in 2015.

Please be thoughtful in how you protect your plants by avoiding chemical pesticides in favor of interspersing repelling plants. Also a mix of garlic and cayenne makes a great plant spray.

Happy Earth Day 2015! Springs Trails, Fungus, Butterflies and Wildflowers

Happy Earth Day from Hot Springs National Park.  Last year Butterflies in the park were scarce.  This spring however they have returned to feed off the abundant Tree pollen coating the leaves.  Colorful Wildflowers are blossoming and Gilled Fungi are rising up from the Forest floor.  Vibrant greenery on each trail heralds a return of the Spring Rainforest.

Why so many Violet photographs?

Every Spring my blog posting are filled with a variety of Violets.  To be honest I understand some of might be thinking, “Why so many Violet photographs?”

Each violet reminds me of my Mother as they were always her favorite flower.  She wore Devon Violets and lovingly tended the patches Violets blooming along the walkway leading to our front porch.

My Mom passed away in August of 2010 as I was rediscovering my passion for Nature photography.  In February of 2010 after the winter snow melted I was hiking the Goat Rock Trail in Hot Springs National Park. Amid the dried Leaves and dots of green I noticed a tiny purple flower. It was the discovery of that pretty Bird Foot Violet pushing through the Forest floor debris that begun my love affair with wildflowers.  I printed the photo and sent it to her in Oregon.  During that Spring I regularly sent her photos of the different violets I discovered while hiking.

I hope you will continue to read my blog each spring even though they will as always be filled with Violets.

Redbud Trees Create Layers of Spring Color

Layers of Spring, Nature’s brush strokes upon the Forest canvas.  Vibrant pink Redbud Trees glow among the bright new green Leaves of the awakening transition.   Below wild Violets and Periwinkle are sprinkled within the emerging ground cover.  The delightful song of a curious Mockingbird accompanies my travels to view and capture the wonders of my favorite artist.
