Grey skies of spring often reveal colors, textures and shapes muted by sunlight.  Although sunny days provide vibrant images the details are often muted.

Beautiful Birds in the Changing Forest

A beautiful sunrise in the changing forest as song Birds serenade the morning light. Flitting Butterflies, a flying Squirrel plus hanging out at the breakfast club with a Chipmunk and a Chickadee.  It was a perfect late summer hike.

Don’t forget to get outside and play… the trails are waiting!

Beautiful Birds on every Trail

Lovely birds flocked to Hot Springs National Park on February 05 2015. Only minutes on the first Trail I spotted a Female Cardinal plus a mixed flock of Robins and Cedar Waxwings. All were enjoying the berry laden Trees.  On the Short Cut Trail several Male cardinals were crisscrossing the trail.  A blur of red in the bright morning sun.

At the top of Hot Springs Mountain a mixed flock of Eastern Bluebirds and Pine Siskins land on a Tree next to me.  It was the first time I had seen either of these birds in a flock.  They hung on the side of the Tree fighting for pecking position in the mossy areas.

Bird song filled Hot Springs Mountain Trail during my hike around the mountain.  Juncos, Pine Warblers, Sparrows and Yellow-Rumped Warblers created a beautiful sight with a delightful chorus as they traveled in mixed flock.

When I was changing my camera battery a sweet little Hermit Thrush landed on a branch near my shoulder.  It appeared curious watching me closely as I zipped up my pack.   A perfect end to a hike that was for the birds 😉

A Beautiful Windy Autumn Hike at Lake Catherine State Park

Yesterday I had planned to take a quick hike in Lake Catherine State Park, Arkansas.  I did hike but it was not quick, high winds and glittering autumn foliage had me mesmerized.  One trail lead to another, before I knew it I had hike them all and discovered I needed more camera batteries.  Long before I left the park images and video had drain all 5 batteries in my camera bag.  Note to self: “Buy more batteries.”

I was blessed to see autumn painted Trees dance in the wind sparkling with jewel like leaves in the morning sun.  Lovely Pine Warblers peaked at me from the branches of tall Short Leaf Pines.  On several occasions I had fleeting glimpses of majestic Whitetail Deer.  For what seemed only a brief moment a lovely Doe let me take photographs and shoot video of  her graceful grazing.  She paraded back and forth lingering in sight to distract me from what really mattered, her nearby fawn.

Aster and goldenrod waved in the breeze along the trails as a green caterpillar tried to hold firm on a log.  Colorful leaves floated on the wind and road the rippling Lake surface.  I climbed 100 year old rock stairs, scooted under a fallen Tree and crossed wooden Forest bridges.  The wind caressed my skin and tugged at my long hair as the sun tried to warm my face in the cold air.  It was a glorious day in park.

Five Hour Hike Pt 1 – Wildflowers, Flowering Trees, Lizard and Song Birds

I did not think I would be hiking for five hours when I stepped out the door. A big storm is coming so I wanted to photograph all the lovely Wildflowers and Flowering Trees prior to the arrival of the high winds, rain and lightning.  It never occurred to me there would be so many spring blooms along the trails.  I kept hiking taking photographs following Wildflowers and lovely song birds.

As I leaned in to take a photograph of a Birds-Foot Violet on the Goat Rock Trail I found myself eye to eye with a Northern Green Anole.  Now brown and blending into the Tree to my side it was a wonderful surprise.  It was a joy to find both pink Oxalis and Pussy Toes sprinkled along the tail edge between patches of Violets.  When I arrive at the Hot Springs Mountain Trail head there is a lovely field of Springs Beauty.  They are a spectacular display of small white with pink stripe Wildflowers.

Along the Hot Springs Mountain Road rich purple wild Violets have sprung up within the dark green foliage.  Wonderful blossoming Trees are glowing in the morning light along the road leading to the top of the mountain.  Nature has brought a glorious early spring to Hot Springs and the National Park.
