My Climate Change Canary in the Coal Mine is Purple

HSNP West Mt Canyon Trail Birds-Foot Violet

It is October, the insects are still biting :( and the afternoon temperatures are still reaching into the 80s. The occasional cool morning in the upper 50s has caused a few of the Trees in Hot Springs to begin their Autumn change.  This is the warmest of the four Autumns I have experienced since I moved to Arkansas.

Each year I wait for the arrival of beautiful Birds-Foot Violets.   They usually appear in mid January and into February often in-between snow storms.  Today I was surprised to find these two Violets  nestled on the edge of the Canyon Trail on West Mountain. Nearly 3 months ahead of their normal arrival time or 9 months late as I did not see many this past Winter/Spring. On the Sunset Trail I found large patches of Blue Sage Wildflowers,  they usually arrive in March and April.  Beautiful Butterflies were all over the trail attracted by the variety of Wildflowers. Autumn Beauty on Music Mountain Butterflies and Wildflowers

Last winter temperatures lasted no more that 2 weeks then we were thrust into Spring.  Summer temperatures began in late April, the drought and 100 degree temperature continued into September.  If the temperatures don’t fall I would not be surprised to see Spring Wildflowers throughout the park.  The rain that never fell last spring has arrived this evening, can’t wait to see what blossoms in the park.  Is climate change real? In Hot Springs National Park and Arkansas I would have to say YES!

Autumn Leaves Rain Softly Upon The Trail

Autumn paints the Forest in Leaves of red, gold orange and plum. The evening light ignites the colorful fireworks flickering on the October breeze.  In quiet release from the branches above Leaves rain softly upon the trail in a vibrant display.

Shabbat Shalom! Beautiful Shades of Autumn Color

I had a busy day but I wanted to wish everyone Shabbat Shalom!  If we are friends on facebook you have already seen my weekly posting of  the Challah I bake each Friday :) .  I want to share some of the beautiful colors of Autumn in Hot Springs before I light the candles.  If you are from Hot Springs or hike in the National and State Parks I am the woman with the big camera aiming up into all the changing Trees.

Have a Glorious Weekend!

Nothing speaks to my Heart of Autumn like the beauty of changing Maple Leaves. The late evening light made them glow and they were irresistible.  Nature draws me in and I am lost in her beauty.

A Lovely Late Afternoon Hike in Hot Springs

Whenever my husband Rick and I go for a combination urban and Forest hike there are always wonderful surprises.  Yesterday there was a cool custom motorcycle with wicked bare bones architecture.  I discovered 4 metal garbage cans surround by their own picket fence hiding behind the Fordyce.   High above us a Red Tail Hawk soared on an autumn breeze.  Nestled in a berry laden bush a Mockingbird belted out a wildly eclectic tune.  Beautiful Butterflies and Bees were drawn to the blossoming Bushes and Wildflowers.  Never underestimate the possibility you will experience something new in familiar places.

Beautiful Autumn Leaves, Fungi and Wildflowers

Autumn rain and cooler temperatures have begun to change the beautiful Forest in Hot Springs National Park. The greenery is beginning to transition to yellow, orange and red.  Autumn Wildflowers of purple, pink, blue and yellow are emerging from the covering of old Leaves, Twigs and Rocks. Fungi some the size of large dinner plates have sprouted from stumps and the Forest floor. It is a glorious time of the year for hiking.

I went on a journey to find Autumn Leaves (more about this in my next blog) on West Mountain and then kept hiking until I found a wonderful surprise on Music Mountain.  All along the mountain top ridge I was surrounded by colorful Wildflowers and Butterflies.  It was surreal after a summer drought devoid of these glorious gifts from Nature.  After my 8 mile hike I was still floating upon the joy of seeing the beauty of the Forest.

Step outside the walls of your life into the limitless unknown of Nature.  Even the often traveled trail changes each day to reveal something new.  The glorious tiny details often missed in the landscape which stretches out in all directions waiting for us to see with our Hearts.  Always beckoning with a gentle whisper the Universe guides us to the beauty of sacred spaces called Nature.
